Travelers Tales:
Our destination for this Sunday is exiting Greek and Cypriot waters but remains in Europe. More specifically we are travelling to one of my favorite -can never get enough- destinations; France!
The name "Cordes" was thought to come from the Indo-European root "corte" which means rocky heights. Since 1993 it was renamed to Cordes-sur-Ciel because the small town can be seen floating in the sky above the low clouds and mist.
Cordes-sur-Ciel is a fortified town built in 1222 by the Count of Toulouse. In that same year he also gave its charter for Cordes to become a bastide. It is considered to be the first of the bastides of Southern France. Bastides were created to resettle and shelter people who had been displaced by the Albigensian Crusade. Also they were intended to colonize southwest France and encourage agricultural and market related development [1].
You can travel to Cordes via airplane to Toulouse and then you have three choices. Either take a taxi, a train or drive. I believe that the most cheap way is taking a train so look through your options carefully.
Cordes-sur-Ciel is a well preserved bastide with stone narrow streets to walk and enjoy the beauty of nature. During your walk notice the preserved houses of Gothic architecture built in the 13th and 14th century and discover small shops with art, pottery and glass objects. One may actually get lost in time as the medieval and Goth element is very intense. So get carried away and let your imagination travel back in history as you walk the stone paths of Cordes. If you are lucky maybe your stay there will coincide with one of Cordes Festivals where everybody can wear their medieval costumes and really live the experience!! So be sure to look it up before making reservations. A visit at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is also a must once you are there.
I found myself there in a family event, about 10 years ago. We traveled up there to get my cousins daughter baptized and this little traveler was the godmother! So we had an amazing event with the wonderful background of a small town dressed in greenery and surrounded by clouds. I am sure that if you choose Cordes you will have a nice and relaxing break from a busy schedule in the city and connect with France's history and tradition! A magic part of France in a different way. And while you are at it you may as well stay a couple of days in Toulouse to discover the beautiful pink city of Southern France.
Hope you enjoy this weeks' destination and have a lovely week everybody!! Until we meet again in one of our travelling locations, wishing you my very best!

[My dear readers,
Our location is a small French medieval village, of about 1000 inhabitants, located south of France. The town of Cordes-sur-Ciel is found in the department of Tarn of the French region Midi-Pyrenees and it is part of the district of Albi.
